Overview

Once the teacher has assessed student's prior knowledge of the life cycle of trees, students will watch a Slide Show presentation. Next, students will take an outside hike where they will look for examples of the different stages of the tree life cycle. Students will create a PowerPoint (Google Slide) OR a fold-able that names and explains each life cycle stage.

  • White construction paper/copy paper for foldable (2 pieces per student)

Educators Information

Students should already know the parts of a tree and their function and have a general idea of how trees survive and adapt to their environment.

All living organisms have life cycles that include being born, growing up, reproducing, and eventually dying. Physical growth and change are natural parts of the tree life cycle. Trees are more likely to survive and thrive in each stage of their life cycle when survival needs are met. A tree has multiple annual cycles within its life cycle (tree rings). Seeds are an important stage in the life cycle of a tree.

Procedure

1. Draw a life cycle graphic organizer on the board to assess students’ prior knowledge.
Make note of the parts of the cycle that need to be taught for deeper understanding.

2. Present the Life Cycle of a Tree PowerPoint (in resources)

3. After the Powerpoint, write in what students learned on the graphic organizer.

4. Students should be put into groups of 2-3.

5. Take students outside to look for the 4 stages of the tree life cycle. Students should take pictures OR draw an example of each stage of the life cycle.

6. Working in their small group, students create a fold-able or PowerPoint/Google Slide with 4 parts. (seed, germination, seedling, adult)

7. Students may present their product to each other or a first grade class/student.
